March 2021--I never really knew how the term "bucket list" came to be, so I did a little research. Some say it's because of a movie by the same name. Others say it derives from the phrase, "kick the bucket." And since it's a metaphor for dying, a bucket list details aspirations of what said list-creator would like to do before dying. Make sense? Maybe.
I'll call it my aspiration list. (Though the container freak in me kind of likes the bucket thing going on.) Things I've always wanted to do and never did. Things I've thought about doing but never did. Things I wish I had the courage to do but never did. Not yet anyway.
A few years ago I developed an aspiration list. I was nearing my last chemotherapy and needed something to look forward to, so promised myself I'd do as many of the 30 items on the list as I could. It's been more than two since since the list was created and I didn't put much of a dent in it. So as not to look like too much of a failure in this endeavor, I'll focus on the success of completing the ones I did.
1. Stop making so many lists and freaking out when I don't get things crossed off. DONE!
Still make lists but no freak-outs if I didn't get to cross it off. Instead, it does on the next day's list. And the next day after that if need be.
2. Spend more time IN the lake instead of just ON it. DONE!
For someone who isn't too crazy about water, I've spent more than my fair share floating on the lake and have loved every minute of it.
3. Go tubing. DONE!
There's video to prove it. I could not have done it without family members who drove the boat, recorded it and hopped on to ride with me.
4. Bake chocolate chip cookies from scratch. KINDA DONE!
This past December, we had a little-making day like the ones in the Hallmark Christmas movies with my daughter, Mandy, daughter-in-law, Allie, daughter's dear friend, Meghan, and her mom, Sue. So, here's the thing. I didn't actually make the batter but it was homemade. And I did help put them in the oven and help take them out of the oven. And--I helped eat them. So this counts as "kinda done." Baby steps, right?
5. Sit on my patio and just stare at the stars. DONE!
The stars in Michigan over our lake are so big and bright (now you wanna clap your hands like they do in the song, don't you?) It's so relaxing. So peaceful.
6. Organize my photos, frame them and hang my favorites. PARTIALLY DONE!
It's still a work in progress, but I'm working on it and making progress.
7. Consider getting a puppy. DONE!
Keyword: consider. Out of the blue came this adorable, little, floppy-eared Fox Red Lab. At 16 months, he's still a bit of a wild child, but he really is so doggone cute.
8. Love like there's no tomorrow.
This one doesn't get a "done" or a "partially done" or even a "kinda done." Nope. Instead it goes on my forever list.
Take it one day at a time...
